Well, definitely KNOW them. On the internet, you can't really know someone that well at all. I've known people in friendships that last for years, relationships.. all of which were based on false pretenses. The reality is that there are stalkers, pedophiles, and other generally sick perverts online. This is especially problematic when you are a female, or if you are young in general.

The only time I ever meet people is if I have known them for a CONSIDERABLY long period of time. I'm talking in the years category here. I've made a lot of really amazing friends off the internet. Which is sort of strange I guess. Yet it's becoming more and more common and I for one can definitely understand why it's an easy place to meet people.

i guess all I want to stress is that people be careful. Follow all those seemingly dumb rules that parents/authority figures stress. Never meet someone alone, and it's always essential to meet them in public places.

I'm not saying that everyone online is a looney toon, most people are perfectly normal. All it takes is one crazy idiot to cause you problems, grief or even pain.

You just can't see who people REALLY are on the internet. Too many variables, and opportunities for people to lie.
Here's an experiment for you:

You met a guy or girl.
After they begin talking like they know you for nine years, deman a phone call. Any hesitation or avoidance and they are either married, in prison, or not who they claim to be, and they will suddenly, inexplicably, stop being accessible.

Background checks are also the rage

Try it. Trust me.

I've been in probably six or so clans since I started gaming back when I was living in Naples, Italy on an American base. Life there was pretty high and tight, as this was in 2001, around september. Some friends of mine got me hooked on CS while I was in junior high their and ever since then i've been a gamer.

In my time in different clans I've met alot of jerks. assholes, or what have you, and yet if you can see through the bad, there are always good people. Like take for instance last year I was diagonsed with cancer, my clan mates (who i have been with for 2 years now) put together a care package with a scrapbook and photos of all of them, with little messages of encouragement. In addition there were other things like some sweet games, and even a PSP . Knowing that they were there for me really made it alot easier togo through the whole ordeal. Hell they even sent me flowers and ballons all the way from California Because face it, people you meet online, are people too, just like people down the street from you. These guys are really great, and i've called some of them to just talk to to them on the phone, to say hey whats up, how are ya?

The internet is a really great place to meet people, and not everyone on here is a jerk, you just need to get past the initial people acting like pre teens to have a better appreciation for people you meet online. So to anyone who thinks that people who meet online are nerds, or stay at home people with no lives, you're dead wrong, this is just an extension of real life, there are faces behind the pixels.

I can't say that I've personally had any experience in that, but I know that 2 of the clan officials in my Half-Life: TFC clan got married and had met via TFC, so I thought that was pretty cool.

I also have friends and family that have moved away and we use the net and gaming to stay intouch and interact. I have met people that I have later met in real life due to our mutual desire to do so, one of those meetings led to a physical relationship that eventually ceased on the physical side but we remain in contact to this day. My point here is that weather it's the internet or a bar there are possibilities and dangers in both.

So why is frowned upon to endevor into an "on-line" relationship that could still blossum into a "real" relationship? I think it is because some people are fixated on appearance and not personality and intelligence and appearance can be hidden or manipulated behind an internet entity so can many other things but if you are intelligent and careful you can see through those falsehoods. I can know someone better by talking to them and asking questions over the internet or from behind a wall than I can from a picture or a visual representation. I'll trust my mind before I trust my eyes anyday of the week! When it comes to people.

Mistress, don't let any of these bozos talk you down, I trust your itelligence and your self-confidence so you keep on asking your questions and speaking your mind!
Chalt speaks the truth!!! =D way to say it all the way ^_^

I started using the internet to chat with other people in 2002...kinda late for me but I wasn't into that and was more into cosole gaming and what not. Anyhow It started off with me meeting this one guy who I became friends with. Anyway it went on and he introduced me to these two girls he knew online that were sisters. This was all in January of that year. Though I lost touch with the guy the two girls remained my friends for a long time. The younger of the two has been possibly my best friend in the entire world. When I've done something completely retarded she's smacked me back into place...and she's been kinda harsh sometimes. As for the older one, who I've been in an on and off relationship with since May of 02, this past febuary she was kicked out of her home by her mother over stupid reasons and opted to move in with me. We are currently planning on getting married sometime early next year.

Well I guess I've been online and talking to people since a good few years ago... not sure when maybe 2002 or 2003. Have I actually met any of the people I've known online offline? No, not as of yet. But if I had the fnaces to fly out to America and stuff I would definatly consider it. Also, I've added people from school and stuff, and just generally become closer friends with them. Through the net there was no shyness and they got to know me and I got to know them better and that strengthed our relationships. Also, my best friend moved to Wales almost 3 years ago, it wasn't a great time losing one of the closest friends I've ever had. And anyway, we both nbever really used the phone but one day about 6 months later we decided to meet up and stuff, and I just ended up staying at his house for about a week and introducing him to MSN and stuff, and now we both use that to keep in contact somewhat... rpoblem is we talk a lot more to each other IRL :P . Anyhow he came down and spent last week with me, I hadn't seen him in like 7-8 months and it gave us the oppotunity to know that we are both still close friends and although we have grown apart somewhat we shall remain friend, hell, I'm even going down to his house for a week either today or tomorrow. So yeah, the net's a good way to keep in contact and stuff (I even convinced this friend to get GW and now we play together :P ) . But it's also a way to meet people, I mean it was an internet friend I've talked with for maybe a year or two that convinced me to get GW, and I don't know if we'll ever meet up, I doubt it though.

I also have become quite close with an internet friend I met through my other IRL friend who I was talking about... anyway, the IRL friend got this online friend to help him out with his sie and stuff, and of course I did too as I was his IRL friend :P . Anyway, that site turned out to be a load of rubbish and went no-where but I quite liked this other guy so I asked him if he wanted to help out with my site... so he did. Anyway that went on for a few months after which I've just pretty much given up on my site (I keep telling myself I'll do it sometime LOL) and we still talk a lot in MSN and stuff. He and I have both influences each other's musical tstes and such... if I was given the oppitunity to meet him IRL I wouldn't say know. I mean I already know what he looks like and he knows what I look like... hell I even know his shopping habbits (eBay :P ) and other stuff, but meeting someone IRL is always gonna be "the next step" and I guess it's just a brave step I'm not willing to take likely.

If you know someone from the internet and realy do know them and get the oppitinuty to meet them sure why not, they are a real person so why not?

Interesting short stories. I am in fact getting to know people from this thread.

There ARE still some good people on-line. This thread proves it. Also it proves there are still those bad apples that try to spoil the bunch.

Way Way back in another century before I was married we (typical group of young guys) went to this one bar called "The Phone Booth". (This was before Cell Phones too)

Every table and booth in the place had a phone with a number up on a stand that could be read from a distance. (They were all "princess phones" too BTW) You could just call up a table and chat with whoever. Nice novelty at the time.

Good times.

I have no clue if he has been really banned here or in the game. I assume he has not been really banned.

Yes Sir. The late 1970's had its moments. Disco was not one of them, however Disco Bars were great places to meet women. The catch was you HAD to dance to that Disco Beat to really have a chance at meeting women.

In fact I met my wife a few years later in a Rock n Roll bar. Once again dancing was the key to my success. Now she begs me to get out on the dance floor.
